JALAN-JALAN CARI MAKAN IN PHNOM PENH #4

Mamak’s  Corner

A mamak stall is a food establishment which serves mamak food. In Malaysia, the term mamak refers to Tamil Muslims, who generally own and operate them. Although traditionally operated from roadside stalls, some modern mamak stall operators have expanded their businesses into restaurant or cafe-type establishments. Mamak stalls tend to be popular among Malaysian youths as hang out spots, due to cheap food and beverages being served 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

People of all races, religions and ages frequent mamak stalls to gossip or catch a late-night football game while enjoying a cup of hot teh tarik. No other eatery has quite as much cultural significance in Malaysia, save for the kopitiam.

Since we were here for 2 months, of course we missed the mamak food in Malaysia. We start to visualize how delicious the roti canai, cheese nan, chicken tandoori, maggi goreng, teh tarik and many types of foods they have. Owh! Can we go back to Malaysia for awhile? We promise, after we finish eating we will come back and continue our jobs here (We know that it is impossible). :p

After we search in the internet and told by the seniors, we finally knew that there is a mamak stall here in Phnom Penh. We tried to find where the stall is located and finally we found it in their website, http://mamakscorner.com. This restaurant is located at #17, St 114 Sankat Phsar Thmey 1 Khan Daun Penh, behind the Phsar Thmey.

The direction to Mamak's Corner

We went to the restaurant early in the morning because we have to teach His Excellency (previous entry) at the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF). On the way go to MAFF, we decided to drop by at Mamak’s Corner to have our breakfast.

Menu for breakfast

This is the best drink I ever had in Phnom Penh. :)

The taste was delicious!

We only ate nasi lemak and teh tarik because we ran out of time. But we did felt so good because it had been so long since we had a good breakfast like this.  When entering the Tuk Tuk, Nani said, “This morning we ate nasi lemak and drank teh tarik, and now it seems like we are in Malaysia. It was a long time ago since we ate like this and I really miss the taste of it. So, where shall we go now? KLCC my friends?” :p
