To Teach Is To Learn Twice Over

Every Thursday and Friday evening, Bad and Nani are assigned to teach His Excellency, Mr. Ty Sokhun Bahasa Melayu. For your information, he is the recent Director of Forestry Department Cambodia. It is an honor for them to have the opportunity to teach our national language to one of Cambodia’s high profile person.

His Excellency Ty Sokhun

At first, they were very shy to teach His Excellency since he is a well respected person in the ministry moreover when they noticed that every person who met with him will bow down as a sign of respect. But as they get along, they learn that His Excellency is very friendly and a humble person. He is also very enthusiastic in learning our language and he can memorize our words very quick.

Our teaching methods – translation books, dictionaries and sample of exam papers

Early on it was quite difficult for them to teach His Excellency because they have to translate Bahasa Melayu into English first before explaining to him. But after a few sessions, things getting better and it becomes easier to teach as His Excellency now can understand and have the idea about the structure of our language. It was quite a challenge for them to teach someone who doesn’t have any basic in our language, but for them the teaching experience was fun and really exciting.

Bad quoted, “It was funny when we have to teach His Excellency by using dictionaries with pictures, reminds me of the time when I was small. Imagine that we have to teach him pengimbuhan (affixes), kata sendi (prepositions), penjodoh bilangan (classifier) and other Malay grammars which we had learnt at school. Above all, it is a good teaching experience for us.”
